How do I start learning on Awujo?

What lesson types do you offer?

We offer three ways to engage with us. Group classes are live 8-week cohorts with up to 6 students. 1:1 lessons are private session packs at your own pace based on your schedule. Ba mi Soro is a 30-minute conversational practice session with a native speaker. You can find a full breakdown under the Lesson Types tab.

How do I know my level?

Take our short placement test on the platform and we will recommend a starting level. If you grew up hearing Yoruba but never formally studied it, you are probably a Level 1 or 2. If you can hold a basic conversation but want to go deeper, start at Level 3.

Do I need to create an account before enrolling?

Yes. Creating an account takes less than two minutes and lets you access your classes, Google Meet links, homework, and Ilu Awujo all in one place.

Are lessons live or pre-recorded?

All classes and sessions are live. Group classes and 1:1 lessons run on Google Meet with a real teacher in real time. Ilu Awujo, our animated series, is available to watch on demand as part of your learning experience.

Can I get a refund?

Group classes: full refund if requested 5 days before the cohort starts. No refund after the first class. 1:1 lessons: full refund before your first session. Non-refundable after that, with two grace credits per pack for late cancellations within 24 hours. Ba mi Soro: cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance or the session is forfeited. Events: full refund up to 2 days before the event.

What is a group class?

Group classes are live 8-week cohorts with up to 6 students and one native speaking teacher. Each session runs on Google Meet and follows our 5-level curriculum. Classes are small by design so your teacher actually knows you, your level, and why you are here.

What is a 1:1 lesson?

A 1:1 lesson is a private session with a native speaking teacher, structured around the same 5-level curriculum as group classes but tailored entirely to you. You purchase an 8-session pack and work through it at your own pace.

What is the difference between a group class and a 1:1 lesson?

Group classes give you community, accountability, and the experience of speaking Yoruba with other learners. 1:1 lessons give you full focus, flexibility, and a pace set entirely by you. Many students do both at different points in their Awujo journey.

Can I switch levels mid-cohort?

We do not recommend switching mid-cohort as each level builds on the previous sessions. If you feel misplaced after your first class, reach out to us and we will sort it out before the next session.

What is Ba mi Soro?

Ba mi Soro means talk to me in Yoruba. It is a 30-minute one-on-one conversational practice session with a native speaker. There is no curriculum, no correction during the conversation, and no pressure. You just speak.

Who is Ba mi Soro for?

Anyone who wants to practice speaking in a low pressure environment. It works well as a standalone session, between cohorts to keep your Yoruba fresh, or alongside group classes for extra speaking time.

How does a Ba mi Soro session work?

The session has three parts. A short intro to get comfortable, an 18-minute free conversation on a topic you choose, and a 5 to 7 minute feedback window at the end where your teacher shares a few strengths and one or two things to work on.

Do I need to be at a certain level to book Ba mi Soro?

Yes, Ba mi Soro is designed for Level 3 and above. It is not a class and your tutor will not be teaching you. They will be working with you to help you express what you already know. If you are below Level 3, a 1:1 lesson is a better fit.

Yes. Ba mi Soro is a standalone offering and does not require a class enrollment. If you are currently taking classes, Ba mi Soro is also a great way to supplement your learning and get extra speaking practice between sessions.

Log in to your Awujo account and your Google Meet link, schedule, homework, and Ilu Awujo episodes will all be in your dashboard.
